Music Children with disabilitiesMusic Adventure Program (MAP) is a group of 12 students, a majority group with disabilities, and a minority group who are typically developing.  This is a unique inclusionary model.  The students who are typically developing attend as full participants. The purpose of the class is to provide a music experience for a mixed abilities group  that promotes self-expression, communication, self-esteem, belonging to a group, and FUN!

Musician and percussion instructor Russell Horton, and vocalist Kristen Carmichael-Bowers  team up to lead this class. These two imaginative and highly skilled musicians are developing a unique music class that uses voice and many instruments to support students in musical self-expression, communication, improvisation, and singing. By using both rhythm and voice, students who have physical, cognitive, and communication challenges are all  afforded opportunities to express themselves in a language of music within a community of music-makers.

Music Adventure ProgramSharing music brings people together and enriches lives in transformative ways.  There’s nothing quite as mysteriously binding and satisfying as making music together. MAP soundly (pun indeed intended) demonstrates that we are all truly musicians.

MAP shares the same philosophy as NEYT's Theatre Adventure Program, exploring and celebrating the vast abilities of all the students with the language and tools the arts have to offer.

"The instructors were very committed to working out how to make this new music program successful for ALL the participants.  Beyond the actual sessions, they solicited and listened to constructive feedback from the participants and their caregivers.  During the sessions, they musically engaged each participant, both individually and collectively, within a welcoming atmosphere."
