Music School Faculty Recital Saturday, April 4, 7:30 pm, Centre Congregational Church, Brattleboro, VT
Brattleboro – BMC Music School faculty member Richard Ullman will present a classical guitar recital on Saturday, April 4 at the Center Congregational Church in Brattleboro at 7:30 pm.
Ullman’s wide-ranging program will include popular music from Elizabethan England, a lyrical suite by Baroque composer David Kellner, waltzes from Venezuela, several Celtic songs, and two famous pieces he arranged for guitar by Paul Simon.
“I’ve known Richard since 1980 when we musicians got together at a Shakespeare festival,” notes Richard Riley, Managing Director of the BMC. “He was a terrific player then and an even better player now. He’s never stopped searching for interesting pieces and refining his technique to play in a myriad of classical styles.”
Ullman has been a teacher at the Brattleboro Music Center since 1991. He began his teaching career in 1971 and is fond of saying that the BMC is the best music school he's ever been part of. Richard Ullman received his BA from Harvard College and his MFA in Early Music from Sarah Lawrence College - where he taught for eleven years. Ullman has performed widely and has also taught at Tufts, Concordia, Central Connecticut State, Green Mountain College, and at Castleton College for fourteen years. A graduate of the Kodaly Center of America in Massachusetts and the Kodaly Pedagogical Institute in Hungary, Ullman also served as accompanist on lute and guitar for the English song classes of Sir Peter Pears at the Britten-Pears School for Advanced Musical Studies in Aldeburgh, England.
Some of Ullman credits include his winning a national guitar competition in Washington, D.C., and even a screen credit: Ullman can be heard playing in the movie Meet the Parents.
"Richard's recitals are always a treat," said Sabine Rhyne. "He is very thoughtful with his musical selections, and they often span a wide variety of styles. This program is no different. He plays a beautiful and soothing instrument beautifully; he brings his audiences along his musical journey in a seamless and comfortable way. It's sure to be a wonderful end to your evening out!"
The BMC Music School Faculty Recital featuring guitarist Richard Ullman will be held on Saturday, April 4, 7:30 pm at Centre Congregational Church on Main Street in Brattleboro, Vermont. Tickets are $12, free to BMC students under 22.Visit bmcvt.org or call 802-257-4523 for more information.
